Josip Juraj Strossmayer

Josip Juraj Strossmayer was born in Osijek, February 4, 1815, his father was Ivan and mother Ana born Erdeljac. Six grades of Franciscan high school he graduated in Osijek, and then continued his education in the Seminary, Đakovo. Upon completion of the second year of studying philosophy he was sent to a seminary in central Pest, where he studied theology. He became a doctor of philosophy on 24 October 1837. He was ordained priest on February 16, 1838 in Đakovo. For two years he was a chaplain in Petrovaradin, and then went to Vienna as a cadet "Augustinum". At the University of Vienna, he became a doctor of theology in 1842. After returning to Đakovo he was appointed professor in the Seminary (teaching philosophy, mathematics and secular history, and biblical scholarship). With the success he was teaching canon law at the University of Vienna. By recommendation of the Bishop Kuković and in accordance with ban Jelačić, he was appointed Đakovo's bishop on November 18, 1849. He was named in Vienna where he even staggered bishop on 8 September, 1850. The ceremonial installation and taking over the diocese took place in Đakovo on Indian Summer (September 29) in 1850.

Bishop Strossmayer managed the diocese for fifty-five years. In the period from 1866 to 1882 he built the cathedral in Đakovo, which is hallowed: "Glory to God, the unity of the church, unity and love of his people." He participated in the First Vatican Council in 1869 and 1870 and became the voice of one of the first and greatest orators of his time. He helps to found the Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb (1868), and for the purchase of books for the library of the Academy he donated 5,000 forints (for purchasing the library of Ivan Kukuljević). His merit in Đakovo come Sisters of Mercy of St. Cross in 1868, which is devoted to education of female youth. In 1873 the diocese launches newsletter "Messenger diocese of Đakovo and Sriemsko" which comes out today (137 years). In 1880, opened the diocesan printing house, which has developed a rich publishing activity to its closing in 1945 when it was nationalized. His valuable collection of paintings and artwork (235 of them) donates to the Picture Gallery, which was opened in 1884. Persistently and lovingly Bishop worked on cultural, educational, charitable and political field. He helped many cultural events outside the Croatian borders. Promoted and financially generously helped to open a secondary school in Croatian towns, national libraries, hospitals... For all this work he received the honorary title of Father of the homeland.

Bishop Strossmayer died in Đakovo, 8 April, 1905 at the age of 91. He was buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of Đakovo.

Work in the reading room

  • By entering the reading room, coats, bags and umbrellas are left in the dressing room (space right before the entrance to the reading room).
  • Food and drink can't be brought in and consumed in the reading room.
  • Bring only the most needed stationery in the reading room.
  • Please do not put back used material (books and magazines) by yourself! Leave them on the edge of the table and librarian will put them back in their place.
  • If you need to use the material for a while, please fill out the form "Study" which can be found on the desk of the library and leave tucked the form with books. Books will be waiting for you at the table next 2 weeks.
  • Every day the reference literature back on the shelf, and for it doesn't applies rule of retention on the table two weeks - you can always find the dictionaries, manuals and magazines on the shelves, in their place.
  • In the reading room should be quiet - and if you talk to someone, do it quietly not to disturb other students. It si forbidden to talk by mobile phone in the reading room!
  • Writing seminars: in the reading room there are 4 computers which you can use for writing the seminars. They have no printers, so bring a floppy disk, CD or USB stick to save your work.

 

Note for researchers:

According to the SNFK regulation, chapter 37.:

Valuable books of general culutre character, magazines and older releases (up to 1950) can be read in the reading room of the library. The same can not be photocopied.

 

So please:

  • announce yourself by telephone or e-mail 3 days before with a list of items that you want to study
  • you can bring your own laptop to work in the reading room or a camera to record the necessary material for your research

Borrowing policy

  • The library is primarily intended for students and professors of the Faculty.
  • Books are borrowed to students who are enrolled in the current academic year.
  • By the first borrowing of books users will get the seal in index that testifies to borrow books. At the end of each semester / year, all books must be returned by the user. Without the returned books and seals in the index user - the student can not enroll in the next semester and year.
  • In the borrowing books form, which you can find at the university (beside the mailbox for the application form), please provide the requested information. Insert the completed form for ordering books in the box for applications up to 11 AM. The requested literature can be taked over the same day, after 12 o'clock.
  • You can borrow 3 books from the library. You can keep the borrowed books for 15 days, after that you must return or you can once again "extend" the borrowed books to another 15 days.
  • You can "extend" the borrowed books even by telephone on Library's phone number.
  • After the expiry of the loan period, if the deadline is not extended, overdue charges of 0.50 kn per day and the title.
  • Users undertake to preserve the structure in good condition. Destroyed or damaged book user is required to buy on his own charge.
  • Reference library doesn't lend from the library (encyclopedias, reference books, dictionaries, rare titles, etc.). Also, you can't borrow any magazine.
  • For the study of archives, you can use the form for ordering books. Archival material can't be taken out of the reading room, and neither photocopying is not recommended.
  • For external users feel free to use the reading room.

 

Orders

  • For regularly enrolled students and other users, the book can be ordered every day from 10 to 18 o'clock.
  • For each ordered book you need to fill out a form for borrowing books.
  • 4 titles can be ordered and 3 can be borrowed.
  • The ordered books must be picked up the next day; otherwise the reservation is canceled.
